Ground was broken for a new jail in January 2009, and the $55 million facility was completed about twenty months later. The new medium/maximum security expansion is approximately 139,000 square feet in size and is designed to house 685 inmates; the majority of that space is dedicated to housing inmates. The Brazos County Detention Center, when combined with our existing facility on the same site, can now house up to 1,087 inmates and has slightly more than 200,000 square feet.
